Present in over 40 countries and reaching more than 80 million consumers weekly, Carrefour is a major name in retail with a significant impact on production and consumption habits. Aware of its responsibility, the brand launched its ambitious "Act For Food" program in 2018. Its goal? Addressing the heightened need for food safety and consumer trust, following several food scandals involving the likes of GMOs, antibiotics, and other controversial substances.

With "Act For Food," Carrefour has made strong commitments to democratise organic products, improve recipe quality (reducing salt and sugar, eliminating controversial substances), and ensure better traceability. These actions also aim to reduce waste and packaging while promoting healthier and more environmentally friendly eating.

Michèle Paque had the unique opportunity to discuss this major plan with Geoffroy Gersdorff, General Manager of Carrefour Belgium. Together, they touched upon the main challenges faced by Belgian and international consumers, Carrefour's role in creating healthier and more sustainable food accessible to all, the increasing proportion of virtuous products on the shelves, the Nutri-Score, and the need for more information on allergens and product origins.

“Consumers increasingly understand the impact of their diet on their health and that of their family; they just need guidance towards healthier, more balanced, and better-proportioned consumption. Our goal is to offer healthy and sustainable food accessible to the greatest number.”

According to Geoffroy Gersdorff, Carrefour is more than just a link between producer and consumer. The brand also has a major educational role, helping consumers with their food choices, highlighting the benefits of local and seasonal products, and creating balanced recipes and menus. At the heart of this approach is a positive customer experience supported by expert nutrition advice, attractive stores, and an engaging presentation of products.
