The EV market is making the shift
The global electric vehicle market is changing at speed. In the first half of 2026, Europe recorded more than 5m EV sales—including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and hybrids—reaching a 69% EV market share. This shows a decisive and irreversible shift towards electrification across the automotive industry.
The PwC Autofacts® Electric Vehicle Sales Review provides a clear, comparable view of sales trends, market shares, top-selling models, and OEM performance across Europe, China, the USA, and other key markets worldwide.
The Belgian EV market shows a clear move towards fully electric vehicles. Consumers are increasingly bypassing plug-in hybrids and choosing battery electric technology instead.
Belgium registered 83,282 battery electric vehicles in the first half of 2026, representing a 36% market share. BEV sales grew by 8% year to date compared to 2025, with Q2 2026 momentum even stronger at 20% year-on-year growth. Belgian drivers are clearly embracing fully electric mobility.
Plug-in hybrid sales tell a different story. PHEV registrations fell by 38% year to date, with Q2 2026 recording a 37% decline compared to the same period last year. This major drop suggests that consumers adapt to the new fiscal regulations for companies, effective since the beginning of 2026.
Despite strong BEV growth, total electrified vehicle sales (BEV, PHEV, and hybrid) were flat at 0% year-to-date growth. The 54% total EV market share reflects a balance where BEV gains are offset by PHEV losses. Hybrid vehicles maintained steady progress with 6% growth.
Traditional combustion engine vehicle registrations fell by 4% year to date. This reinforces the steady transition away from fossil fuel powertrains in Belgium.
